Varun Joshi - On Doing Good through Tech, Loving Cricket & Having the Best MBA Study Group

Tell us about yourself 😄

Where are you from?

Wellington, New Zealand

What is your role in TMC this year?

Senior Treasurer (Core)

What's a fun fact about yourself?

Fulfilled my dream of watching a cricket match at Lord's Cricket Ground during the 2019 World Cup.

Pre-MBA Life 🤓

What is your story leading up to the MBA?

I have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and Master's degree in Earthquake Engineering from the University of Canterbury (NZ). Prior to the MBA, I worked as a structural engineer in the engineering services industry for more than 6 years across NZ, Fiji and UK.

Outside work, I love playing/watching cricket, hiking and travelling to new places.

Why did you decide to do an MBA? And why LBS?

I decided to do an MBA to transition out of engineering and broaden my career opportunities in the business world.

I chose LBS for three reasons:

1. Diversity of student body and emphasis on developing a global mindset

2. Flexibility of the programme

3. Location

Why are you interested in technology / what about technology are you most interested in?

I was truly able to appreciate the importance of tech when I was given a tremendous opportunity early in my engineering career to lead the technical development of an application that would help clients understand the impact of an earthquake on their assets and potential implications for re-occupation post-earthquake. Therefore, I'm driven by the ability of tech to 'do good' in society.

LBS Experience 😎

Describe your LBS MBA experience in 3 words

Influential, Engaging and Transformative

What has been your most memorable experience from the LBS MBA so far?

I had the best first-year study group one could ask for!

What was the most challenging part of pursuing your MBA during a global pandemic?

The amount of on-screen time lack of certainty on return to in-person teaching.

What are your summer 2021 plans?

I completed a Pathways Operations internship at one of Amazon's largest sortation centres in the EU. The purpose of my project was to increase the hourly throughput of the site through iterative stress testing requiring extensive stakeholder engagement, planning and technical analysis.

Plans Going Forward 🚀

What are your post-MBA goals/plans (in terms of career, life/living etc.)?

Career-wise, I would like to continue working in the operations/supply chain areas within tech.

What is your motto/mindset going into your final year of the MBA?

Learn as much as I can and continue to build meaningful relationships with people inside and outside the classroom.

What do you hope to achieve through TMC specifically this year?

In addition to being the Treasurer, I look forward to helping the club put together amazing events for students.

Finally, what, if any, advice do you have for incoming LBS students?

Make the most of all the opportunities that come your way!
